West Virginia Gun Laws & Firearms Safety Practice Exam

To purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer in West Virginia, individuals must provide proof of residency in the state, along with undergoing a background check. West Virginia law mandates that before any firearm sale, the dealer must perform a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to ensure the buyer is not prohibited from owning a firearm due to reasons such as felony convictions or restraining orders related to domestic violence.

Proof of residency typically involves presenting valid identification that verifies the buyer's address, ensuring that the purchase is compliant with local regulations. This dual requirement of residency verification and a background check is in place to promote responsible firearm ownership and enhance public safety while adhering to federal guidelines.

The other options do not reflect the complete requirements set forth by state law, as they either omit the necessity of proof of residency or suggest alternate requirements that are not mandated for a handgun purchase.
